SPF

A key element of environmental and solar protection, SPF is a well-known acronym in the world of skincare, and particularly for those living in Australia.

SPF stands for ‘sun protection factor’ and it measures how effectively a sunscreen filters UV radiation, particularly UVB which is a wavelength that causes sunburn. So, what do the numbers mean? SPF15 will filter approximately 93% of UVB radiation, SPF30 filters approx. 97%, SPF50/50+ filters approx. 98% of UVB radiation with proper application and reapplication.

Considering the Solar Constant
While UVB is responsible for the sunburn we see on skin, the full spectrum of light, also known as the Solar Constant, can cause accumulative damage with prolonged exposure. UVA radiation is responsible for the breakdown of collagen and elastin deep within the skin, presenting as wrinkles and fine lines, brown spots and is connected to longer term risks like melanoma. Other components of
the Solar Constant include Visible Light (the light we see) and Infrared (the heat we feel). Studies indicate that repeated exposure to these bandwidths can cause the damage to skin’s cellular health and vitality.

‘Sunscreen’ vs SPF
Not all products that bear an SPF rating are considered a primary sunscreen. Many skincare products—and all colour cosmetics—that offer SPF are classified as a secondary or ‘cosmetic’ sunscreen. Meaning that their primary purpose is not a sunscreen first and foremost, but as an additional benefit to their function of visible or cosmetic enhancement—everything to illuminating skin, to
visibly evening tone, to offering moisturising benefits, and more. These secondary sunscreens, such as #3 The Brilliance Tinted Serum SPF50+, are still subject to the rigorous testing, regulation and compliance required to claim their respective SPF rating. With proper application and use, their rating is not considered any less effective than a primary sunscreen.
