Why Our Skin Needs Topical Skin Nutrition
Overview
Akin to the idea of feeding skin 'from the outside in’, topical skin nutrition, as the term suggests, is delivering targeted nutrients directly to the skin via active skincare to support hydration, barrier repair, antioxidant defence and skin rejuvenation.
Unlike oral nutrition, topical application provides support where the skin needs it most, complementing diet for a holistic approach to skin nutrition, health and wellbeing.
A considered approach to formulation and delivery ensures active ingredients are absorbed efficiently and work in harmony with the skin’s natural processes
For many years, the concept of “feeding” the skin was dismissed in dermatology. The prevailing belief was that the skin’s outermost layer—the stratum corneum—formed an impenetrable barrier, preventing meaningful absorption of topical ingredients.
This understanding has since evolved.
Advances in skin science have demonstrated that while the stratum corneum is highly protective, it is not impermeable. When correctly formulated, topical actives can be absorbed and utilised by the skin to support optimal skin health
What is the stratum corneum?
The stratum corneum is made up of 15–20 layers of flattened, dead skin cells (called corneocytes) held together by a mix of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids. This structure works to keep irritants out and keep moisture in. At the same time, it’s cleverly selective, allowing smaller, well-formulated active ingredients to pass through and get to work where they’re needed most.
What is topical skin nutrition?
Topical skin nutrition mirrors the way we nourish the body through diet. Just as essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and healthy fats support overall wellbeing, the skin also benefits from these core nutrients.
These nutrients can be delivered to the skin’s surface through targeted skincare, to help strengthen the barrier, defend against oxidative stress and maintain hydration. By applying them topically, they work directly within the skin’s upper layers to protect by day and repair by night.
Oral nutrition vs topical skin nutrition
Nutrition plays an essential role in overall health, and the skin is no exception. However, the way nutrients reach the skin differs significantly depending on whether they are consumed orally or applied topically.
When nutrients are ingested, they are absorbed through the digestive system and distributed systemically. Vital organs such as the brain, heart, and liver are prioritised, with the skin receiving nutrients later and in smaller amounts.
Topical skin nutrition, by contrast, allows for direct support – right to where skin needs it most. Actives are applied precisely where they are needed and can be formulated to interact with specific layers of the skin. For this reason, diet alone is rarely sufficient to meet the skin’s complex and ongoing needs.
The six facets of skin health explained
Through extensive research, RATIONALE identified six pillars of skin health: a system of three collections for daytime protection, followed by three for overnight repair, providing all of the skin’s daily nutrients at the correct concentrations.
These are known as The Essential Six Collections. Each collection addresses a specific aspect of skin health and works synergistically with the others.
The Strengthening Collection: Supports the skin’s barrier function using a Skin Identical complex of B-Group Vitamins.
The Brightening Collection: Delivers antioxidant protection with Vitamin C to defend against environmental stress and solar-induced free-radical damage.
The Brilliance Collection: Provides environmental and solar protection using actives found naturally within the human body, including Zinc Oxide and Melanin.
The Nourishing Collection: Restores and strengthens the skin barrier with a complex of ceramides and Skin Identical lipids.
The Refining Collection: Rebalances the skin and refines texture through targeted organic hydroxy acids and peptides.
The Rejuvenating Collection: Supports nightly rejuvenation using Vitamin A, Bakuchiol and DNA Repair Enzymes.
Our topical skincare delivery system
Effective skin nutrition depends not only on the selection of actives, but also on their delivery.
RATIONALE’s Skin Identical formulations are designed to optimise topical absorption, ensuring that active ingredients reach target tissues and cells at the correct concentrations. When precisely calibrated, these formulations work in harmony with the skin’s natural processes.
